What are dissociative disorders?

Dissociative disorders are mental health concerns that involve disruptions in consciousness, memory, identity, or perception. The two primary dissociative disorders are dissociative identity disorder (DID) and depersonalization/derealization disorder (DPDR). Though these two experiences are very different, they both manifest as a dissociation—a disconnection between thoughts, identity, consciousness, and memory—that can profoundly impact your daily life and sense of self.

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a complex condition typically caused by chronic childhood trauma. It is characterized by the presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states. These identities often have their own way of perceiving and interacting with the world, accompanied by gaps in memory that cannot be attributed to normal forgetfulness. Individuals with DID may experience disruptions in their sense of self, memory, and consciousness, navigating life with different identities that may emerge in various situations.

Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder (DPDR) involves persistent feelings of detachment or disconnection from oneself (depersonalization) or the external world (derealization). Individuals experiencing depersonalization may feel as if they are observing themselves from outside their bodies or that their thoughts and sensations are not their own. Derealization, on the other hand, involves a sense of unreality or detachment from one's surroundings, leading to a feeling of living in a dream-like state. DPDR can result from a variety of causes, including trauma, substance use, and intense anxiety or depression.

DID Treatment - All Parts are Welcome.

I strive to foster a safe and supportive environment where all parts are welcome. I employ a multifaceted approach centered around Internal Family Systems (IFS), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). My treatment strategy emphasizes fostering communication and collaboration among different identities through IFS, enabling a deeper understanding of each identity's role and needs. EMDR aids in developing important internal resources and reprocessing traumatic memories. This helps to alleviate the emotional impact of the trauma and improve your ability to cope with stressors and trauma-related triggers. CBT addresses unhelpful thoughts and behaviors and helps you build healthier thoughts and habits. This integrative methodology aims to facilitate healing, promote coherence among your parts, and equip you with effective coping strategies for managing distress. I understand the intricacies of DID and tailor my therapeutic interventions to your unique experiences.

DPDR Treatment - One Size Does Not Fit All.

My approach to treating Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder is centered on uncovering and addressing the root causes of your dissociative experiences. The root cause of DPDR symptoms can might be trauma, grief, anxiety, or depressions, and my therapeutic focus involves identifying and working through these core issues. Delving into the underlying cause helps you alleviate depersonalization and derealization by treating the source rather than merely managing the symptoms. I employ a multifaceted therapeutic process that also encompasses strategies to assist you with managing and coping with these distressing symptoms while simultaneously addressing the root issue. I aim to empower my clients to navigate their experiences and regain a sense of connection and presence in their lives. I prioritize creating a nonjudgmental and supportive space where you can explore your experiences with understanding and compassion.
